Casting our cares on Jesus

Casting all your cares upon him; for he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7

It is a happy way of soothing sorrow when we feel "He cares for me." Come, cast your burden upon your Lord. You are staggering beneath a weight that your Father would not feel. What seems to you a crushing burden would be to Him but as dust. Be patient, God has not passed you over in His providence. He who is the feeder of sparrows will also furnish you with what you need. Do not sit down in despair; hope on, hope ever. There is One who cares for you. His eye is fixed on you, His heart beats with pity for your woe, and His hand omnipotent will bring you the needed help. He will bind up your wounds and heal your broken heart. Do not doubt His grace because of your tribulation, but believe that He loves you as much in seasons of trouble as in times of happiness. What a serene and quiet life might you lead if you would leave providing to the God of providence! If God cares for you, why should you care too? Can you trust Him for your soul and not for your body? He has never refused to bear your burdens; He has never fainted under their weight. Come then! Cease fretting, and leave all your concerns in the hand of a gracious God.

Restaurant Dishes

I have often mentioned that I've been collecting restaurant dishes, most notably Buffalo china dishes? Here are some of the dishes I have found over time at the Goodwill.

hummmm, good price.....

a stack of four plates for $2.06.

I also picked up this lovely little piece -

The marking on this dish is also Buffalo China and it has the number 1916. Now I don't really think this dish is from 1916, but it could have been a trademark date or something. I've never run across Buffalo Fine China before.

So I finally have enough plates to serve a little luncheon.

Thanks for stopping by. Happy Thriftin'

New Bern

Founded in 1710 by Baron Christopher de Graffenried of Bern, Switzerland, New Bern is the second oldest town in North Carolina and the first state capital.

A big fire during the Civil War burned a number of homes in what is the historic downtown. Since the town of New Bern was occupied very early in the war by the "Federals" (Union Army forces), many of the old houses were saved. When the residents returned to town after the war, many of their homes were occupied by freedmen and squatters, and it took many years for the ravages of the war to disappear. The First Presbyterian Church, however, had been used as a Union hospital during the war and had sustained significant damage during the Battle of New Bern and its subsequent medical use.

Pepsi Cola was invented in New Bern in 1898. It was originally called "Brad's Drink" after Caleb Bradham, the pharmacist who invented it.

This is the Harvey Mansion Historic Inn and Restaurant. It was located directly across the street from our hotel. I have to tell you that we enjoyed one of the best meals ever!! I've never had Lobster Bisque before, but it was so delicious, I could have licked the plate :-) A very worthwhile place to stop if you are ever in the area.

Color me Pink!

I love decorating my hutch. We've had this hutch and dining room set for over 30 years. The hutch becomes a canvas to change for every season.

The pink dishes and glassware came out for Spring.

Every piece of china was acquired at Goodwill or thrifting. The Teapot however, I found at Cracker Barrel a couple of years ago. Now tell me, how could I pass this up??

I love the look of my Pink dishes and glassware. But now it's time to transform this hutch with my Blue dishes for Summer.

Restoration

Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice.

Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.

Psalm 51: 6-12

A faithful friend

I have a very sweet friend. She has been a friend of our family for over 20 years. Mrs. D. is a lively Southern belle who loves to bake goodies for my family. She will invite me over for lunch and we visit for the whole afternoon. Mrs. D's hubby died about 8 years ago, and it has been a lonely time for her. Her children and grandchildren live in different states, so it is hard for them to come very often.

A Couple of years ago I made this little quilt for her birthday.

It was a very easy pattern (Sticks and Stones) which made it quick and fun to put together.

Mrs. D loves to watch the Food Network and the Travel shows on cable. She tells me that she has traveled the world by watching these programs. And she loves the chefs that design new recipes. We often are the recipient of a new cake or cookie recipe that she has experimented with. She usually tells me she took a taste test and she did not think it was very good. When I bring the treat home, it is gone in no time flat. But that is her hobby now, especially since she had hip surgery a few years ago. It really limits her ability to walk very much. Her limited walking has not limited her heart. She can whip out a bowl of soup, a grilled cheese sandwich and a tall glass of sweet iced tea at the sound of the doorbell.

Here's my sweet friend...............

"A faithful friend is a strong defense; and he that has found such a one, has found a treasure."

Outdoor Wednesday

These beautiful roses and gazebo are part of the landscape of a local library. It's always a delight to see these roses on my way out of the library.

Summer Mantel

Having a mantel has been both inspiring and challenging. I love to decorate for the seasons, but sometimes I am limited. We love the picture over the fireplace so we don't change that out. Here is a little bit of summer on our mantel.

I painted this seaside plate many years ago under the tutoring of my Mother in Love.

Thrifty finds

I love thrifty finds at retail stores. Recently I purchased these Spring place mats at Kohl's. They were 90% off. I was able to purchase six place mats for 79c each.

There was also one floral mat for 99c.

They are perfect for my back porch table.

And a Goodwill score were these Fiestaware cups and saucers.

I already had four c/s that I had purchased in Georgia last year. But at this price, I could not pass them up.

So I put them all together for a fun Spring time table.

The cup tower was found at a thrift store a couple of years ago. Sugar and Creamer were acquired while on a trip to Missouri. Pink Goblets from North Carolina and the pink plates were from an antique shop in North Florida.

It's amazing sometimes what you can find when you are "just browsing".

A Bow in the sky

This morning as I was taking out the mail, I saw this beautiful rainbow across the street.
