Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a truly patriotic holiday which is celebrated on the last Monday in May. It is a day set apart for remembering and honoring those who died while serving in the American Armed Forces.

In 1971 Congress passed a law making Memorial Day a national holiday. Typical Memorial Day celebrations include parades, special programs and speeches. Americans often attend picnics and baseball games, and almost any other type of outdoor event made possible by the freedom these soldiers died to protect. This holiday is the unofficial beginning of summer.

Picadillo

My Mom was a fabulous cook!  She came from a large family so I'm sure she had her share of cooking during the growing up years.  Living in a town where the mix of Spanish, Cuban, Italian and American cooking was common, her cooking always had a taste of International.

My Mom passed away while I was in my 20's, so I never learned the ethnic dishes that she cooked so well.  But I found a scribbled paper where she had jotted down the ingredients for Picadillo, a traditional Latin American dish.

Red, White and Blue

 Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving our country.  In the United States it is celebrated on the last Monday of May.  It is an honor to pay tribute by raising the Red, White and Blue, the colors of our American Flag.

Scripture Sunday

Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heaven and home,
When Jesus is my portion? My constant friend is He:
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

“Let not your heart be troubled,” His tender word I hear,
And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears;
Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise,
When songs give place to sighing, when hope within me dies,
I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Refrain
I sing because I’m happy,
I sing because I’m free,
For His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.

Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father.
But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.
(Matthew 10:29-31)

Just an old fashion girl

My daughter and I love to search for vintage things. From linens to glassware, we love to find something old. A very special aunt taught us a lot about finding a treasure. We used to go to garage sales, thrift stores and antique malls with her through the years. She always loved pretty things, and she passed that love onto us.

I decided.........

.... I was not going to cry!!! I went to the Library to check out the audio of "Persuasion".  However I discovered that it was already checked out! Bummer..... Well I could check out something else to listen to in the car.

 I know, I've been wanting to listen to "Marley and Me" by John Grogan. I found the CD's and stepped into the check out line. As the librarian looked at what I had, she asked if I had read the book. I told her no, but had heard it was good. "You better get the tissues out, cause it will make you cry." Well before I even popped the first disc in, I told myself I would not cry. I mean it is a story about a dog..... I can handle that.

A Cozy Spot

Do you have a cozy corner in your home.  A spot where you can curl up with a book and enjoy an early morning respite?

This beautiful teacup is a Hankook Fine Bone China (England), a prize sent to me by Martha who has a delightful blog, Martha's Favorites.  You must stop by and visit Martha as she shares her very lovely collection of tea cups.

 A sweet rose from my daughter for Mother's Day.

O God, thou [art] my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsts for thee, my flesh longs for thee in a dry and thirsty land...............(Psalm 63:1)

Sunday Scripture

The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall  not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for His name's sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.

Psalm 23

My Pressed Flower Friend

Today would have been my BFF 60th birthday.  Diane lost her battle with cancer 8 1/2 years ago.  But I still think of her and miss her.  So in memory of Diane, I wanted to share this poem, written by Sherry Morris.

Antiques and Old Lace

My beautiful Gardenia bush has been sharing it's fragrant flowers in abundance.  Between the Gardenia and Jasmines, the fragrance has been a delight to the senses.  Come join me as we sit on the porch and breathe in the sweet floral incense.

The lace tablecloth belonged to my Mom and she had it for as long as I can remember.  The luncheon napkins were a gift from my step-mother who brought them back from Spain in the early 70's.

Good Day Sunshine

The last few mornings have been so bright and beautiful.  So this morning, I was going to make a Sunshiny Breakfast table, but we did not have any sunshine today :-(  So I brought out my happy Rooster pitcher to brighten things up.

It sure is a great way to brighten a gloomy rainy day.
